proofreading.
I offer proofreading and copyediting (not editing!) services. Primarily, the focus of editors lies with the effectiveness of narrative, structure, and dialogue. Proofreading, conversely, is a service that authors ought to enlist only at the final stages of their novel's development. As a proofreader, I will address the following:
- Typos
- Grammatical and punctuation errors
- Missing or duplicated words
- Tautology
- Dangling modifiers
- Inconsistent tense use
- Incorrect use of dependent clauses
- Plot and continuity anomalies
I am also happy to add general comments about how I, as a reader, am processing and reacting to the story if you'd like the positive feedback - but again, proofreading should be the last process that your manuscript goes through, and you shouldn't come to me just yet if you intend to continue changing your piece after I've taken a look at it.I accept short stories longer than 1,000 words, and manuscripts up to 100,000 words. In general, I take around four weeks, but please allow for a longer turnaround with manuscripts over 80,000 words. I can make corrections either by using the Suggestions function on Google Docs, or the Track Changes function on Word. In either case, you will always be able to review the changes that I've made.I charge $0.005USD per word, or $5USD per 1,000 words. I will not ask for full payment until after I have finished proofing your manuscript. I do not want my price points to serve as a barrier for aspiring authors, particularly those who are BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, disabled, low income, or otherwise marginalised. Please send me an email if you'd like to either negotiate a discounted service or set up a payment plan.
